England v Australia, 1st NatWest ODI, Headingley

Clarke remains to seek one-day solace Why are you still here? For Michael Clarke, seeking to recover Australia's pride at the start of the NatWest Series, the question was not just implied, it was asked directly. Look, you've got a bad back, you've lost the Ashes, you deserve sympathy. Shouldn't you be resting up at home? If anything is designed to get Clarke's back up, as it were, it is dollops of sympathy from English cricket journalists. He has remained on what now must seem an overlong tour, knowing he must leave England with a one-day trinket or face the back-biting. As two unproven one-day sides face up to other in a best-of-five series, nobody can confidently predict the outcome. Clarke now seeks solace, as well as the never-ending need to communicate to the Australian public that the decline hurts him just as much as it does them. Or maybe that is not the case anymore. Perhaps he needs to persuade the Australian public that he cares more tha

Zimbabwe v Pakistan, 1st Test, Harare, 3rd day

Younis Khan rated the quality of Zimbabwe's bowlers so highly that he regards the two-Test series in Harare as ideal preparation for Pakistan's next challenge against the No.1 ranked Test team. Pakistan take on South Africa in the UAE after the Zimbabwe leg wraps up and Younis hopes the experience gained here can be put to good use on that assignment. "The Zimbabweans bowled so well, they made it difficult for us, it's definitely good practice for us when we get back to Dubai," Younis said. "Also, the wicket is very good so we can really get some time but they are making it tough for us to score runs." Although Zimbabwe's attack did not profit as much as they did on the first day, when there was still something in the surface, as they tied Pakistan down to a scoring rate of 2.4. Hamilton Masakadza, the Zimbabwe captain, was pleased with the effort on a pitch that was at its best for batting. "The guys bowled really well, they appli

England's decision to rest several senior players from the NatWest Series against Australia was not to everyone's tastes. Michael Vaughan, an Ashes-winning captain, who knows what fatigue after the Ashes is all about, suggested half-seriously that spectators should be offered their money back. But when Eoin Morgan, who is deputising for Alastair Cook as captain, spoke of "a great energy" in the squad ahead of the first ODI at Headingley and dismissed suggestions that this series is very much a case of After the Lord Mayor's Show, the case for a freshened-up England squad was hard to resist. Rest those who are weary and open up opportunities to others: it is not a bad philosophy. Those who contended that watching a settled England Test side win the Ashes without much panache at times became a bit of a drag should logically now be beside themselves with joy at the prospect awaiting them. "Young, talented and exciting," is how Morgan described h

Zimbabwe worked hard to take a slender first innings lead of 32 runs with three wickets in hand. The hosts finished Day 2 at 281 for 7 in reply to Pakistan's 249. Update at Lunch on Day 2: Zimbabwe look good at 67 for 1 after bowling out Pakistan for 249 in the First Test at Harare. Opener Vusi Sibanda took quite a few body blows to remain unbeaten on a brave 30 from 74 balls. Skipper Hamilton Masakadza who joined him in the 9th over has moved onto 19* from 44 balls which includes a confident six off Saeed Ajmal. The Zimbabweans lost their first wicket when Junaid Khan from round the sticks angled one into the right-handed Tino Mawayo (13) and got it to seam away to force an edge. The hosts have batted out 24 overs before lunch losing only Mawayo. Prior to that, it took just two balls for the hosts to get the last Pakistani wicket with overnight batsman Saeed Ajmal losing his off stump to Tendai Chatara. Ajmal couldn’t add anything to his overnight score of 49 to miss
